Innovative nursery school opens in Uus-Veerenni

A new branch of Kalli-kalli nursery school opened in the Uus-Veerenni neighbourhood developed and built by Merko. The long-awaited new addition to the city centre early childhood education landscape has nine classes and serves about 150 children.

Meant mainly for Uus-Veerenni residents but with limited availability for others, the nursery school is on Tiiu Street in the proximity to the Uus-Veerenni Park. The modern two-storey building is set on an approximately 5000 square metre plot. Outdoor education and play areas surround the building, which takes up about 2000 square metres.

“Building the Uus-Veerenni nursery school was something we were engaged emotionally with, since it is important to us that our customers also be able to enjoy an integral living environment in the surroundings of their home. We are very glad that the Kalli-kalli nursery school which has long experience and an innovative approach, shouldered the operating duties,“ says Uus-Veerenni nursery school development director Artur Keerov.

“Interest in Kalli-kalli Uus-Veerenni nursery school has been high and we haven’t been able to accommodate all applicants this year unfortunately. But applications for next year can be submitted throughout the school year,” said the nursery school director Signe Suurväli.

Kalli-kalli Uus-Veerenni nursery school has four crèche classes for the youngest children and five preschool classes. Some of the classes have a specific profile to help as many families as possible find a suitable place for growth.

Two classes with a project-based orientation have Estonian as the language of instruction and two of them are in English. A language immersion class can also be selected, with a choice between Estonian or English. In cooperation with the Estonian Montessori Association, a Montessori class was also opened and next autumn another one will open.

The nursery school building at Tiiu 8 is distinguished from the residential buildings in Uus-Veerenni by colourful architecture. User-friendly details have been in the focus. The yard has diverse playground equipment and the WC can be accessed directly from outdoors, which is usually not the case in older nursery schools. The solar panels on the roof help save on energy expenses.

Uus-Veerenni nursery school will be a community centre for the development, offering a number of additional services meant for families – a wide array of enrichment activities for kids and adults, birthday party venue, summer kindergarten service and urban summer camps. The school has spacious and light-filled spaces for this, which can be partitioned by soundproof partition walls if desired. It also offers various support services for children such as play therapy and psychologist and speech therapist.

Uus-Veerenni is the largest comprehensive residential development area in the city centre of Tallinn, located between Veerenni, Vana-Lõuna and Tehnika streets. The 12-hectare quarter is being completed stage by stage and will have 50 buildings. Today people have moved into 38 of them. The quarter has an 8500-square metre public park with playground features, sculptures, benches and even an outdoor library.
